On November 7, 2023, the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees gave their approval for a $5.3 million (USD) engineering and architecture contract, marking a significant milestone in the development of the fourth cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston. This decision solidifies the homeport's position as a leading hub for cruises and sets the stage for accommodating additional ships in the future.

While many details are yet to be finalized, this crucial step paves the way for the establishment of a new terminal, expanding the port's capacity to service a growing number of ships. Galveston has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing cruise homeports, hosting more vessels from the Lone Star State than ever before. Major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and MSC Cruises, all contribute to the port's prominence.

The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees' approval has greenlit consulting and design services for the development of Cruise Terminal 16, with Bermella Ajamil & Partners, Inc. (BA) selected for the task, and the associated fee capped at $5.3 million. Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees expressed optimism about the progress, stating, "This vote brings us closer to finalizing a budget and construction plans, aiming to open the new terminal at Pier 16 as early as 2025." The port's expansion plans are a significant stride toward meeting the increasing demand in the cruise industry.
